Gerusalemme (Fides) - La Custodia di Terrasanta

ha deciso di lanciare un appello alle collettività ebraiche di tutto il mondo per chiedere al governo israeliano di restituire luce e acqua ai frati francescani della natività, che si trovano ormai allo stremo. La Custodia ha cercato di convincere le autorità israeliane di questo, ma alla fine è stato loro risposto di "non disturbare più". Il Portavoce della Custodia, p. David Jaeger, ha detto a Fides: "I frati non possono rassegnarsi alle conseguenze. Per questo confidiamo nei nostri fratelli maggiori ebrei e nella grande simpatia che esiste fra ebrei e la famiglia francescana. Ricordiamo l’eroismo dei frati francescani che hanno salvato molti ebrei dalla Shoa, in tanti conventi, in particolare ad Assisi. Oggi chiediamo loro l’aiuto". (Fides 12/4/2002)

Rifiuto l'idea stessa che la sinistra, ad ogni modo quella italiana, debba difendersi dall'accusa di antisemitismo: non solo perché tanti fra i suoi dirigenti e militanti sono stati - e sono - ebrei, ma perché è nei campi di sterminio nazisti che il sangue degli ebrei si è mischiato a quello dei comunisti.  [....]
Il premio Nobel José Saramago ha detto che quanto sta accadendo in Cisgiordania è un crimine paragonabile a quello commesso ad Auschwitz e tutti hanno gridato alla bestemmia. Certo i due eventi non sono paragonabili, non tanto e non solo per via delle cifre dei morti; ma perché dietro alle camere a gas c'era un disegno teorizzato ed esplicito di genocidio e qui c'è semplicemente la pretesa che la terra occupata dai sionisti fosse disabitata (che però non è poca cosa, visto che per svuotarla, nel `48, i terroristi israeliani compirono una delle prime pulizie etniche) e «solo» un odio di tipo quasi razziale, che mette paura. Ma come non capire la reazione dello scrittore portoghese, se si pensa che un ufficiale di Tsalal - e la citazione è del giornale israeliano «Ma'ariv» - ha potuto dire: «se il nostro lavoro consiste nel prendere i campi dei rifugiati densamente popolati o dislocarci nella Casbah di Nablus, un ufficiale deve tener conto delle lezioni delle battaglie del passato, inclusa l'analisi di come operarono i tedeschi nei confronti del ghetto di Varsavia»? Cosa è mai successo? E come è potuto accadere che un ufficiale israeliano possa arrivare a dire una cosa simile e a comandare gli eccidi di questi giorni? E come commentare le parole del leader del National Religious Party, recentemente ministro, che ha definito «un cancro» il 20% dei suoi concittadini, gli arabi-israeliani? Aveva ragione chi dopo la guerra del '67 aveva ammonito i suoi compatrioti, dicendo che il trionfo appena riportato sarebbe stato un frutto avvelenato. Avrebbe comportato colonialismo e distrutto l'identità democratica di Israele.[...]"

Questo elemento caratteriale sembra segnare tutta la carriera militare e politica di Sharon.
Anche Ben Gurion, che pure ammirava le doti di questo giovane e coraggioso militare, si è chiesto se «Arik» avrebbe finito un giorno per dire la verità"

As the occupying power in this conflict, the responsibility rests with the Israeli government to end this insane cycle of violence by sending its diplomats to do what its soldiers can never do: bring peace and security to the Middle East. We thus call on the Israeli government to immediately, unconditionally and completely withdraw its armed forces from their occupation of all Palestinian areas and for all forms of violence and terror to immediately cease. "European Jews for a Just Peace, EJJP, is a federation of Jewish groups from different European countries.
These groups favour a peace between Israel and Palestina based on the following principles:
- the occupation and colonization of the territories conquered by Israel in 1967 feed the violence which afflicts the Middle East today;
- peace can only be based on the mutual and unconditional recognition of the right of two states to exist side by side, the state of Israel as it has been recognised by the international community within its pre 5th June 1967 frontiers and a sovereign and viable Palestian state, with Jerusalem as their common capital;
- resolution of the problem of the Palestinian refugees on the basis of justice, fairness and practicality."

"Israel is not economically self-sufficient, and relies on foreign assistance and borrowing to maintain its economy. Since 1985, the United States has provided $3 billion in grants annually to Israel. Since 1976, Israel has been the largest annual recipient of U.S. foreign assistance, and is the largest cumulative recip-ient since World War II. In addition to U.S. assistance, it is estimated that Israel receives about $1 billion annually through philan-thropy, an equal amount through short- and long- term commercial loans, and around $1 billion in Israel Bonds proceeds. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu told a joint session of Congress on July 10, 1996, that Israel would reduce its need for U.S. aid over the next four years. In January 1998, Finance Minister Neeman proposed eliminating the $1.2 billion economic aid and increasing the $1.8 billion in military aid by $60 million per year during a 10-year period beginning in the year 2000. The FY1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 appropriations bills included cuts of $120 million in economic aid and an increases of $60 million in military aid U.S. aid to Israel has some unique aspects, such as loans with repayment waived, or a pledge to provide Israel with economic assistance equal to the amount Israel owes the United States for previous loans. Israel also receives special benefits that may not be available to other countries, such as the use of U.S. military assistance for research and development in the United States, the use of U.S. military assistance for military purchases in Israel, or receiving all its assistance in the first 30 days of the fiscal year rather than in 3 or 4 installments as other countries do.
In addition to the foreign assistance, the United States has provided Israel with $625 million to develop and deploy the Arrow anti-missile
missile (an ongoing project), $1.3 billion to develop the Lavi aircraft (cancelled), $200 million to develop the Merkava tank (operative), $130 million to develop the high energy laser anti-missile system (ongoing), and other military projects. In FY2000 the United States provided Israel an additional
$1.2 billion to fund the Wye agreement, and in FY2002 the United States provided an additional $200 million in anti-terror assistance.
For FY2003, the Administration requested $600 million in economic, $2.1 billion in military, and $60 million in migra-tion resettlement assistance" [...].

Israeli soldiers have been heard saying what the Palestinians have felt: a shot to the upper torso is meant to kill. Uccidere giornalisti stranieri "per impedirgli di lavorare: in Israele [...]  è diventata quasi una pratica corrente, con sette reporter, operatori e fotografi assassinati (non dimentichiamo Raffaele Ciriello) fino all'ultimo, ieri, l'inglese James Miller, preceduto di soli quindici giorni dal palestinese Nasi Darwaseh. Centinaia sono stati feriti dal 20 ottobre 2000, quando per primo venne colpito alla schiena il reporter palestinese Abdel al-Khatib. Parlare di «libertà d'informazione», in un paese dove i soldati sparano deliberatamente sui cronisti che danno fastidio (inutile negare l'evidenza) è ormai una chiara falsità; o un'esagerazione apologetica, per usare un eufemismo. Ognuno tragga le sue deduzioni circa le conseguenze che questo ha sul valore della «patente di democrazia» data una volta per tutte.
